recipe request [Dec. 21st, 2009|06:10 pm]

[angelps_7]
Hi everyone! So I went to a holiday party a few days ago, and one woman brought these cookies that I swear are the best cookies I've ever had!... The taste and texture was like a shortbread cookie, and they were plump and thick, not flat. They had a crumbly texture at first but melted in your mouth. I can definitely taste some cream of tartar in them. ALSO, the best part-- they were topped with buttery sesame seeds before being baked-- a nice salty contrast to the sweet, buttery cookie. I was so sad the lady left before I got a chance to ask her for the recipe. Does anyone have an idea of what I'm talking about?? I hope so, this community has never failed me before lol  =) Thanks in advance!

Peppermint Snowballs [Dec. 22nd, 2009|12:10 am]

I tweaked a recipe from Sandra Lee's addition to Food Network's 12 Days of Cookies and came up with something delicious. The original recipe* got terrible reviews, with good reason, but the idea of peppermint sugar cookies really appealed to me so I played with it a bit and came up with this. My mom & I made up plates of several kinds of cookies for friends and neighbors this year, and these were a hit.

Nom nom nom.

Recipe under the cut. )

Hey all,
I remember a while ago [perhaps a year or two back] someone posted about wanting to switch from using toilet paper to home-made cloth alternatives. I too am looking to make that switch. I've been looking for that post or one like it for an hour. Does anyone have the link to it, or a make-your-own-cloth-tp tutorial, handy? Thanks in advance.

Natural sources of energy and water [Dec. 21st, 2009|10:22 pm]

My dad has entrusted me to find out about getting solar panels for the house. He wants to find a new source of energy and maybe even get some cutbacks from the government.:)

So where can we find info on this? How much to solar panels cost? And how can you install them?

Also, is there a way to conserve rainwater? (like for gardening)

Hey everyone! I'm not extremely good at baking but I am looking for Christmas Cookie Recipes for dogs. I looked through the tags but I didn't find any *christmasy* ones. Oh also I was hoping for one preferably without using a cookie cutter.

Thanks! :)

I'm making sugar cookies for the my cousin's son to frost and decorate on Christmas Eve (the poor dear is the only kid). I never frost cookies, so I'm looking for something that will be easy for him to work with (he's 5), but will still taste delicious and sweet.
Any ideas?

Updike Tat. Your Opinion? [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:52 am]

[mood |creative]

I absolutely love John Updike, so I always knew I'd get a tattoo relating to John Updike, and when he passed away at the beginning of '09, I knew this tattoo was even more important. SO, I have narrowed it down to three ideas; please comment and tell me your favorite. 1) rabbit, run - in script on my right hip (I have a Hamlet citation on my left. It is my favorite out of the Rabbit series and the novel that sparked a quartet of wonderful books. 2) rabbit at rest - i also loved At Rest, and figured this was very appropiate because of Updike's death; I think of it as a little homage. Updike is at rest. It is also the final book in the quartet. Would go on right hip. 3) In the pit of the year a king was born - My favorite line in my favorite Updike novel - The Centaur. This is considerably less blantantly Updike-ish, but still nontheless written by the man himself. I think it is a pretty phrase. What do you all think?

Kiehl's skin care [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:33 pm]

[music |show me what I'm looking for - carolina liar]

I came across the Kiehl's (www.kiehls.com) product line in my Natural Health magazine and ended up glancing through their website. The following look interesting:

rare earth deep pore cleansing masque
blue herbal moisturizer
rare earth deep pore daily pore cleanser
centella skin calming facial cleanser
centella recovery skin salve

And they have a counter in Shanghai, which is all sorts of cool. Buuuut, while the key ingredients for these products sound great, Kiehl's does not seem to fully disclose ingredients, so I can't see if there are any nasties to avoid :(

So my question for you all...has anyone used products from Kiehl's (either one of the above listed or others) and what did you think of them? How natural are they? If you own one of their products...I'd love to see an ingredient list >.>

Thanks in advance :) While I still hope to use homemade recipes for cleansers and such, it'd be nice to know if there are decent brands with (mostly)natural ingredients here in Shanghai somewhere.

So many ideas... [Dec. 21st, 2009|03:27 am]

Hello all! I've been reading for quite some time, and I've finally decided to have my say.
I'm going to end up looking like the guy from Momento if I don't stop adding to my list.
I'd like some opinions on which you think are cool and which you think are rubbish:

1. I'd quite like "Aude aliquid dignum", which means "Dare something worthy". I read this somewhere once and scribbled it down, but i can't for the life of me remember where it was.
2. "It is the possibility of having dreams come true that makes life interesting"-- The Alchemist
3. Mischief Managed (I know, I know).
4. What pleasure, sir, find we in life, to lock it from action and adventure?--Shakespeare
5. Remember to the last, that while there is life there is hope--charles dickens
6. What will you adventure? --Shakespeare
7. Hope, Hope to the last! --Dickens

I'm really thinking about getting 6 & 7 on either side of my collar bone, but we'll see.

Hello! My name is Ivana Stab. I’ll be 21 in February. I live in a middle-of-nowhere suburb, but thankfully it is located in Sydney. I’ll be starting my year of Honours early in 2010 to wrap up a Bachelor of Arts (Politics and International Relations). I make perzines and fanzines and sometimes write CD and gig reviews for various websites. Mostly I chain-smoke in Hyde Park and talk incessantly.

Once upon a time, I visited Livejournal religiously. Then it became a bit of a ghost town but I realised recently I really miss it. I’ve met lots of amazing people through this website; some of those people have become good friends of mine “in real life”. I discovered many of my interests and musical loves by stumbling upon them on Livejournal. I’m hoping things will become a bit more lively here so it’d be nice to meet some new people, hence this introductory post.

you’re not punk & I’m telling everyone )

Clogged homemade cleaner spray bottle [Dec. 20th, 2009|10:48 pm]

I have been having a weird problem with my homemade household cleaner. I am using a mix of white vinegar and lemon juice, but in each spray bottle I have tried, it seems to be clogging up the tube and basically the spray will not work. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I really want to use my mixture, it works well, but I hate that I can't use it in a convenient way.

Catcher in the Rye/Holden Caulfield or Chuck Palahnuik tattoos?

EDIT

My apologies.. I have pregnancy brain and I guess I didn't word this correctly. I want to get a quote pertaining to either (..but preferably Caulfield-related) and I just wanted to see the ideas that others had had.. mostly out of curiosity, I suppose.

Sorry for the confusion.

Also, I'm not concerned for your lack of appreciation for Palahnuik. Save it.

Yule log [Dec. 20th, 2009|03:54 pm]

[karstyl]
This is my yule log (and my first post here). The button mushrooms are almond paste, the shelf mushrooms are dark chocolate peanut butter cups, the dirt is ground up oreos. The filling is whipped cream with some buttercream frosting folded in, for stiffness, the frosting is chocolate buttercream with some whipped cream folded in for flufflyness. The cake is a standard chocolate roll cake, like the recipes already posted, and available all over online.

there was that time we got lost climbing the mountain in early june. you thought you knew the path. the sun was starting to set & i’ve always been afraid of the forest at night but you swore you knew the way & the view of the city lights would be worth it. you could see for miles. you could see for years. if we could just get to the top we could change everything. i wanted to change everything. i planned to climb to the top & scream everything i hated & everything i’d lost out into the wind to be carried westward into the past. i planned to scream your name.

here. words. )

Clearing drains without chemicals [Dec. 20th, 2009|06:19 pm]

naturalliving

[elven_ranger]
Just a quick question to ask if anyone has any good tips for how to clear the pipes from the bathroom washbasin . The way the basin is, I cant get at the pipes themselves to  undo the pipes to clean them, but its rather blocked up, with soap residue and such i reckon, and before I have to go and buy a bottle of drain cleaning chemicals (EW!), I wondered if you have any ideas for clearing it in a more eco-friendly way. (have tried hot water and such already).

Thank you! :)
